Employer Spotlight: BC Naturopathic Doctors

Why Paying a Living Wage Matters at BCND

In this short blog, Alix Arndt, CEO of BC Naturopathic Doctors (BCND) explains why they became a Living Wage Employer, and the benefits they’ve found from being part of the program.

BCND is the professional association representing naturopathic doctors across British Columbia. We support our members through advocacy, continuing education, professional resources, and engagement with government and health system partners. Our work is carried out by a small, dedicated staff team supporting a province-wide membership.

We have been a Living Wage Employer since 2024. We made this decision because we believe that people doing meaningful work in support of health care professionals should be able to meet their basic needs without financial strain. As an organization that regularly speaks about access, sustainability, and workforce pressures in health care, it was important that our internal practices aligned with our values.

Since becoming a Living Wage Employer, we’ve noticed real, positive changes in our workplace. Paying a living wage supports stability, reduces stress, and allows staff to focus on their work without constantly worrying about the cost of living. It has strengthened retention, improved morale, and reinforced a culture of mutual respect and trust. Alongside fair pay, we also prioritize flexibility, professional development, and a supportive work environment.

Paying a Living Wage doesn’t just benefit our team. It strengthens the local economy, supports families, and contributes to healthier, more resilient communities. We’re proud to be part of a movement that’s making a difference across the not-for-profit community. As an organization working at the intersection of health, policy, and professional sustainability, we see fair compensation as part of a broader commitment to community wellbeing across British Columbia.

We encourage others to join us in becoming Living Wage Employers. Together, we can create a fairer, more sustainable future for everyone.

Certifying as a Living Wage Employer is a voluntary commitment employers make to invest in their communities and local economies. There are now over 450 Living Wage Employers across BC.

The living wage is the hourly amount someone needs to earn to pay for basic essentials like food and rent, it doesn’t include paying off debt or saving for retirement. The Living Wage for Vancouver is now $27.85 an hour.
