Why paying a Living Wage matters at Home Spritz
In this short blog, Yeonsil Kang, Founder & CEO from Home Spritz explains why we became a Living Wage Employer, and the benefits we’ve seen from being part of the program.
Who we are
Home Spritz is a Canadian house cleaning marketplace founded in Calgary and operating across British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. We provide residential cleaning services to busy families, professionals, and realtors, with a strong focus on consistency, trust, and quality. Today, we support over 100 professional cleaners and have completed more than 23,000 cleanings across Western Canada.
We have been a Living Wage Employer since 2022. We chose to become certified because we saw firsthand how underpaying cleaners leads to burnout, high turnover, and inconsistent service. Paying a living wage wasn’t just the right thing to do morally, it was essential to building a sustainable, high-quality service for both cleaners and clients.
The impact of paying a Living Wage
Since becoming a Living Wage Employer, we’ve seen meaningful, positive changes across our business.
“When cleaners are paid fairly, everything improves. They stay longer, they care more deeply about their clients, and they can focus on doing great work instead of worrying about making ends meet. Paying a living wage has helped us build long-term cleaner-client relationships, which is the foundation of quality cleaning.”
In addition to paying a living wage, we invest heavily in our cleaners by providing consistent clients, flexible schedules, daily pay, and strong operational support. All cleaners are background checked, reference checked, and skill checked, and we carry full WCB coverage and $2M in liability insurance.
Strengthening families and communities
Paying a Living Wage doesn’t just benefit our team, it strengthens the local economy and helps families thrive. Many of our cleaners are parents, newcomers, or women returning to the workforce. A living wage gives them stability, dignity, and the ability to plan for their lives, not just survive month to month.
We’re proud to be part of a movement that’s making a difference across British Columbia and Alberta, and we actively support our communities by prioritizing local workers, ethical business practices, and fair pay in an industry that has traditionally struggled with worker exploitation.
A call to other employers
We encourage other businesses to join us in becoming Living Wage Employers. Together, we can raise the standard for work, create stronger communities, and build a fairer, more sustainable future for everyone.
Certifying as a Living Wage Employer is a voluntary commitment employers make to invest in their communities and local economies. There are now over 450 Living Wage Employers across BC, showing that fair pay and successful businesses go hand in hand.
The living wage is the hourly amount someone needs to earn to cover basic essentials like food, housing, transportation, and childcare. It does not include paying off debt or saving for retirement. The Living Wage for Metro Vancouver is currently $27.85 per hour.
