Why paying a Living Wage matters at Just Mechanical Ltd

In this short blog, Cristina Lawrie, Contract Manager from Just Mechanical Ltd explains why they became a Living Wage Employer, and the benefits they’ve found from being part of the program.
Just Mechanical Ltd has been proudly serving the Lower Mainland since 2007, delivering reliable HVAC, refrigeration, and plumbing services to commercial clients of all sizes. What began as a small operation has grown into a technician-owned company with a team of 32 skilled professionals dedicated to service, repair, retrofits, and new installations. We work with municipalities, institutions, strata corporations, not-for-profits, property managers, and businesses, providing dependable, code-compliant solutions. With certified technicians available 24/7, our clients enjoy peace of mind knowing expert help is always just a call away.
We have been a Living Wage Employer since 2019 because paying people fairly reflects our values, supports our team’s well-being, helps us attract and retain skilled professionals, and ensures the high-quality, dependable service our clients expect. Since becoming a Living Wage Employer, we’ve noticed real, positive changes in our workplace. Paying a living wage has strengthened employee morale, improved retention, and fostered more engaged, loyal, and safety-focused teams, supported by benefits such as ongoing training, apprenticeship support, extended health and dental coverage, and fully equipped service vehicles.
Paying a Living Wage doesn’t just benefit our team, it strengthens the local economy and helps families thrive. We’re proud to be part of a movement that’s making a difference across Metro Vancouver. We encourage others to join us in becoming Living Wage Employers. Together, we can create a fairer, more sustainable future for everyone. Certifying as a Living Wage Employer is a voluntary commitment employers make to invest in their communities and local economies. There are now over 450 Living Wage Employers across BC.
The living wage is the hourly amount someone needs to earn to pay for basic essentials like food and rent, it doesn’t include paying off debt or saving for retirement. The Living Wage for Metro Vancouver is now $27.85 an hour.
