Why paying a Living Wage matters at Victoria Brain Injury Society.
In this short blog, Sharlene Law, Executive Director of VBIS explains why they became a Living Wage Employer, and the benefits they’ve found from being part of the program.
The Victoria Brain Injury Society is changing lives in Victoria, BC. Our small but effective team of 10 amazing staff support adults living with acquired brain injuries through one-on-one guidance, peer support, family resources and community programs that build skills, confidence, and connection. VBIS also works to raise awareness about the often invisible impacts of brain injury and advocates for a more understanding, inclusive community.
VBIS became a Living Wage employer in 2025. When employees earn a living wage, they can meet their basic needs. This translates to less stress, more stability and a greater overall well-being. VBIS strongly believes in investing in our team so they can be fully present and engaged as they support our folks and contribute to a healthy community.
Since becoming a Living Wage Employer, we’ve noticed real, positive changes in our workplace. Paying a Living Wage directly supports VBIS’s mission by creating a more stable, skilled and committed team. When staff are able to meet their basic needs met, they’re able to bring their full energy and focus to the people we serve.
Paying a Living Wage doesn’t just benefit our team, it strengthens the local economy and helps families thrive. Being a Living Wage employer helps VBIS build a stable, committed team, so staff can focus on delivering the best support to brain injury survivors. We’re proud to be part of a movement that’s making a difference across Victoria.
We encourage others to join us in becoming Living Wage Employers. Together, we can create a fairer, more sustainable future for everyone.
Certifying as a Living Wage Employer is a voluntary commitment employers make to invest in their communities and local economies. There are now over 450 Living Wage Employers across BC.
The living wage is the hourly amount someone needs to earn to pay for basic essentials like food and rent; it doesn’t include paying off debt or saving for retirement. The Living Wage for Victoria is now $27.40 an hour.
