Employer Spotlight: MOTIV Architects

Why paying a Living Wage matters at MOTIV Architects

In this short blog, Asher deGroot, Principal and Founder at from MOTIV Architects explains why they became a Living Wage Employer, and the benefits they’ve found from being part of the program.

MOTIV is a community-focused architecture firm with a staff of 5. They focus on the design of housing, learning spaces, farming and food-centric projects. The intersection of these three pillars is fundamental to our vision for thriving communities and a sustainable future.

We have been a Living Wage Employer since 2023. We became a living wage employer to demonstrate our commitment to current and future staff that we want to build up our local community – and allowing our staff to live and thrive in this place is a vital part of that.

MOTIV Architects is committed to both maintaining a Living Wage for our staff, and providing a transparent framework for salaries, raises, profit-sharing and bonusing. Since implementing this we have noticed real, positive changes in our workplace, team well-being and culture. We are committed to volunteering and working in our immediate local community – providing our staff up to 24 hours of volunteer time per year to invest in local initiatives that we care about as a company and they care about as individuals.

Paying a Living Wage doesn’t just benefit our team, it strengthens the local economy and helps families thrive. We’re proud to be part of a movement that’s making a difference across East Vancouver. As an office-based business, we are committed to spending our money for catering, and team events, and business development meetings at locally owned businesses and indigenous owned businesses here in Vancouver.

We encourage others to join us in becoming Living Wage Employers. Together, we can create a fairer, more sustainable future for everyone.

Certifying as a Living Wage Employer is a voluntary commitment employers make to invest in their communities and local economies. There are now over 500 Living Wage Employers across BC.

The living wage is the hourly amount someone needs to earn to pay for basic essentials like food and rent, it doesn’t include paying off debt or saving for retirement. The Living Wage for Metro Vancouver is now $27.85 an hour.
