The North Shore Restorative Justice Society has become a certified Living Wage Employer!
The North Shore Restorative Justice Society (NSRJ) has committed to pay their staff and contracted workers a living wage by certifying as Living Wage Employer. We're so glad to welcome them into the Living Wage Family! Find out more about NSRJ here.
The North Shore Restorative Justice Society is an opportunity to retell your story and work towards a building a future where restorative justices principles, values, and practices are used to prevent conflict and heal wounds.
Since 1997, NRSJ has operated the Restorative Response Program, a community-based initiative that provides an alternative to the court system where youths and adults are able to respond to situations of crime and conflict through facilitation, conferencing, peacekeeping, and mediation that's based on the principles of restorative justice. In 1998, the program began being funded by the City and the District of North Vancouver, allowing the work to expand its services across the North Shore Community. By 2007, NRSJ was able to expand toward West Vancouver, developing two main programs: The Restorative Response Program and the Schools Initiative, started in 2013.
“We’re delighted that The North Shore Restorative Justice Society has become a Living Wage Employer. We hope it encourages other employers to join the Living Wage movement. Paying a living wage is good for workers, employers and the local community” said Anastasia French, Provincial Manager, Living Wage for Families BC.
By joining the Living Wage for Families BC Campaign, NRSJ has committed to providing their employees, workers, and contractors a living wage of $24.08 in Metro-Vancouver. The living wage is the hourly amount a family needs to cover basic expenses. The calculation is based off of a two-parent household with two children – the most common family unit in BC – with each parent working full-time. With that being said, the living wage is not exclusive to a family of four. We recognize the difference of costs that a single parent household, a single individual household, a part-time worker has. We hope to expand our calculations and research soon to be able to bring forth these factors that comprise of the BC population.
"The North Shore Restorative Justice Society is the largest restorative justice agency in the province providing community-based responses to crime and conflict. We also facilitate a number of school-based programs across the North Shore. We are proud to be a Living Wage Employer because we recognize the importance of honoring equity both externally in our programming but also internally within our staff community. This is one important way to do so and is in alignment with our values as an organization." said Sioned Dyer, Executive Director, The North Shore Restorative Justice Society
Over the past two years, the number of Living Wage Employers in BC has more than doubled – there are now nearly 400 Living Wage Employers in BC. Employers have found paying a living wage to be a key tool in their post-Covid economic recovery. 97% of Living Wage Employers in BC have found large benefits to being part of this program.
Certifying as a Living Wage Employer is a voluntary commitment employers make to invest in their communities and local economies.
