Themis Security becomes the first Living Wage security company in BC

Themis Security, based in Victoria, is the first security company in BC to commit to ending working poverty, by paying all its staff and contracted workers a Living Wage.

“Our guards are the backbone of our company. We want to do all we can to attract and retain the very best employees who understand and are committed to the business. By earning a living wage, our guards can live more comfortably and focus on protecting what matters to our clients rather than searching for another paycheque. We are so proud to be the first Living Wage certified security company in BC” says Mirko Filipovic, President of Themis Security.

The living wage is the hourly amount a family needs to cover basic expenses. The calculation is based on a two-parent family with two children – the most common family unit in BC – with each parent working full-time. The Living Wage for Greater Victoria is $19.39 an hour.

“Many workers in the security industry are risking their lives to keep us safe during the pandemic and beyond. It is vital that in return they earn a living wage in order to be able to pay for essentials for their family. We’re delighted that Themis Security has committed to paying their staff a Living Wage. This will make such a difference to low wage workers. We invite other security companies to join the Living Wage movement” said Anastasia French, Living Wage for Families Campaign Organizer.

Certifying as a Living Wage Employer is a voluntary commitment employers make to invest in their communities and local economies.
